Apprenticeship Levy – What is It?

The government has committed to 3 million apprenticeship starts by summer 2020 and to achieve this they have introduced the Apprenticeship Levy. We’ve provided a brief guide to the new Apprenticeship Levy and information on how we support Levy-paying employers.

The way apprenticeships are funded in the UK was amended in April 2017 with the introduction of a 0.5% levy on employer’s pay bills. If passed this levy will only be payable on pay bills in excess of £3 million per year, which is estimated to effect only 2% of employers. This is estimated to provide an estimated £3bn boost to the apprenticeships budget supporting a new wave of young learners. As part of this new plan, employers will also be given an annual offset allowance of £15,000 towards the cost of the new levy.

Your Apprenticeship Levy

The Levy will be collected each month by HMRC through Pay as You Earn (PAYE), which is payable alongside both tax and National Insurance. Your Levy fund will be paid into a new online account called the ‘Digital Account’. This must only be used for activity directly related to your apprenticeships and you have 24 months to spend the yearly funds in your Digital Account.

The Digital Account

If you’re a Levy-paying employer, you can create an account and use it to manage your apprenticeship.
Also, use your new Digital Account to…
